Papaya Trees

This article was published a few years ago (2016).  Sadly a hard freeze wiped out all of our papaya trees. At one time not a day went  by without someone asking “what are those trees over there?”  Austin isn’t exactly a tropical haven in zone 9.  Thanks to our relatively mild winter, these papayas were able to develop into trees. Guess where they all came from?  Believe it or not– a compost bin!  There is one little tree trying to make a come-back, but this time instead of cold weather, it looks like a family of deer has taken a liking to the little plant.
