This article was published a few years ago (2016). Sadly a hard freeze wiped out all of our papaya trees. At one time not a day went by without someone asking “what are those trees over there?” Austin isn’t exactly a tropical haven in zone 9. Thanks to our relatively mild winter, these papayas were able to develop into trees. Guess where they all came from? Believe it or not– a compost bin! There is one little tree trying to make a come-back, but this time instead of cold weather, it looks like a family of deer has taken a liking to the little plant.
